Ninjutsu, sometimes used interchangeably with the modern term Ninpo is the strategy and tactics of unconventional warfare, guerrilla warfare and espionage. This book introduces the basic techniques and concepts of Nunjutsu using step by step graphic demonstrations, ranging from stretching to defending against weapons, and is a great resource for any student of the martial arts, or practitioners of the Japanese fighting arts.

Mostly low quality pictures with very little explanation of 'techniques'. I got the kindle version, so maybe the pictures would be better in hardcopy; granted I don't think either version would be worth the money. This book proved to have very little of value. I've been doing martial arts for over 25 years, have multiple black belts, and have supplemented dojo training with various martial arts books over the years, with this one being the biggest let down so far. Might be worth it for the curious, if it was only $1-2.Product details

the net,,yep they used it,,,gunpowder it was taught to some early so many today say the stuff hayes and bussey did were jst to sell there arts in the zines and get rich....hmmm....i remember hatsumi being featured in a lot of those to and didnt say one bad thing to them and kept teaching them..tanemura and others as well..so there ya go.
a good book to have as well as his dvds the first five...anyway..learn the early stuff..there was a reason itsnot taught anymore...and hatsumi dont come here anymore,.,,rumor or truth super dans? the early stuff rules.

Ninjutsu Basic Skills is a technical work by Robert Bussey himself and only went through this one printing. It was meant for his students. It is for the most part classical ninjutsu, but Bussey himself states he has already been modifying and adding to the art. Excellent Taijutsu, BTW. The cover photo was taken at a temple in Japan, and I am always struck by how much Bussey at that age (he can't be more than 20) looks like Michael J Fox! In the Preface to his book, Bussey writes
"Some students gain an appreciation of the spiritual through admission, acceptance, and final realization that man-self is not God. This book contains no meditational exercises, Kuji-in, mind control tactics, or any form of basic or advanced mental-spiritual techniques. It was written purely for the purpose of giving the reader a guide to proper body positioning and stance. If you can, grasp the natural movement of the Art, work with it, repeat it, and mold it until it becomes instinct....Not all the contents in this book are traditional in nature. Some modernization and personal modifications have been added to update the Art as it is practiced today in my Dojos....it is my intent that this book be a stepping-stone that enables you to become all that you believe Martial Arts should be" (page 1)
Robert A Bussey was to my knowledge, only the second American to go overseas and study Ninjutsu at Masaaki Hatsumi's dojo in Japan (his primary teacher was Toshiro Nagato) and receive master rank--he received 4th dan from Bujinkan Ninpo Headmaster Masaaki Hatsumi. The first to study Ninpo under Hatsumi was Stephen K. Hayes in the early 1970's.
Surprising to note Bussey and Hayes never studied together, nor was Bussey ever Hayes' student, which is somewhat ironic as both have so much in common--if there weren't photos and secondhand accounts of the things both these men have done individually, they'd be hard to believe. Both are Midwestern boys (Bussey from Nebraska, Hayes from Ohio), both got their start in Korean or Japanese karate at about age 11, and both took different paths from the same art. Neither ever seemed to have a problem with the other, despite talk of politics. Each man taught in his own sphere and each has continued to be successful treading his own path and creating successful master teachers in his own wake.
While Hayes tread the path of Shugendo and Mikkyo Buddhist spirituality through Ninpo and adhered closely to the classical teachings of the 9 schools he learned from Hatsumi Sensei, Bussey was a technical innovator and born-again Christian who had no need for what he saw as Eastern mysticism or any form of overt spirituality in his ninpo practice, or impractical Koryu (old-school) applications. Bussey had opened a legitimate commercial martial art school by age 15 after 4 years of non-stop training in Taekwondo and Hapkido, traveling to Korea to train in Young Bi Kwan Hapkido under Man-dong Park while still in his teens (!). In 1979 Bussey was able to gain acceptance to Hatsumi Sensei's Ninpo Dojo in Japan and studied under Toshiro Nagato, one of Hatsumi's master teachers. For you martial arts buffs, if you can obtain it, another book, "King Of Combat" page 33, shows a baby-faced Bussey with his training partner Jun Nakabayashi and Wayne Roy.
Just had to clarify the authenticity of Bussey here, because there were so many people calling what they did ninjutsu (often misspelling it ninjitsu) in the 1980's. There is a lot of fascinating stuff to say about this man, and I am running our of space. Interesting books on one of the foremost Martial Arts innovators in the world--not so well known because he promotes the practice more than himself. Not a student of his...just around enough in those days and today to witness the progression. Few are lucky enough to have the physical talent let alone the determination and support to do what this man did at such an early age and not self-destruct or make enemies. Study his path! It's doable.
my son follows this teaching, he can defend himself and his family
Great photos and useful information.do recommend the book. I also loved reading his magazine articles that he put in martial arts magazine.
Though is not extensive and comprehensive book about Togakure Ryu Ninjyutsu. It's a very good fotographic guide of techniques in the wide aspect of this tradition. What I love the most is the high refinement of the stances and postures shown by Busey sensei... he shows it's possible!!
Very knowledgeable and detailed
NinjutsuBasic Skills and Techniques I gave Five Stars.
Very Good read on History and Technique of Master,Robert Bussey.
Covers his early years of Training in Japan under the Legendary Masaki Hatsumi.Soke.
Taijutsu Bussey takes a more modern approach and there are some very interesting Techniques with the Manriki Gusari and a Chapter on Pressure Points and Herbs and Medicines.
Mostly low quality pictures with very little explanation of 'techniques'.
